Given 4 other selections for her birthday dinner, the wife chose Old Stein Inn. It was a fantastic choice. The food was delicious and the service spectacular. We highly recommend Old Stein Inn if you are in the mood for authentic German food.
Their selection of beer is wide ranging with something for everyone.
I had the Franziskaner Hefe-weissbier and it was amazing. Cold. Served appropriately in a Weizenglas and exactly as described - A yeasty wheat bier with fruity citrus.
To start we had the liverwurst served as a pâté with toast points, made of I believe rye, and gerkins. It was very good. Although definitely could have used a bit more liverwurst, or less toast. There's enough for a light smear. We also got the potato pancakes with homemade applesauce. They were delicious. Small and thin with crispy edges. Perfect for an appetizer. The applesauce tasted just as applesauce should.
For dinner we got the Sampler Platter which came with kassler ripchen (pork chop), bratwurst, and pork schnitzel. We also ordered the Chicken Schnitzel Cordon Bleu which meant is was topped with black forest ham and muenster cheese. Both were served with red cabbage and spätzle. Some pieces of the spätzle was a big flat and wide but otherwise it was great along with everything else. The pork schnitzel was slightly better than the chicken schnitzel because they pounded it thinner.
For dessert we ordered the Apfelstrudel and German Chocolate Brownie sans coconut icing. Both were good but I think the brownie was slightly better. The studel pastry wasn't very crisp, but it was still devoured nonetheless. Both were served with a creamy vanilla ice cream and what seemed like homemade whipped cream.
Overall delicious restaurant that we will definitely be returning to.
